What the Town of Indialantic allows for dogs on the Watson Drive beach, the hours and leash rules, nearby Canova Beach Park, and what buyers should check.
Yes, on a limited stretch. Indialantic designates a dog friendly beach area north of the Watson Drive dune crossover near Sunrise Park. Leashed dogs may go there from sunrise until two hours after sunrise, and from two hours before sunset until sunset. Dogs may not go past the mean high water line, and owners must pick up waste right away.

Buyers looking at Indialantic real estate often ask this before they make an offer, because daily beach access shapes how a dog fits into life on the barrier island. The town does allow dogs on one posted section of beach, with tight hours and leash rules. The rest of the town's beaches and parks generally do not. Here is what the current code says, how to use the Watson Drive area, where to go for longer beach time, and what to check before you buy.
Only in the town's designated dog friendly beach area. The code describes that area as starting at the Watson Drive beach pedestrian dune crossover, running east to the mean high water line of the Atlantic Ocean, then north along that line to the town's corporate limit, then back to the crossover along the seaward side of the dunes.
In practice, that is the sand north of Watson Drive near Sunrise Park at 701 North Miramar Avenue. The town's parks page lists Sunrise Park's dune crossover, observation deck, exercise stations, and 25 paved parking spaces. Look for the posted dog beach signs at the Watson Drive crossover and along the beach edges of the area. Outside that posted stretch, town beaches are not open to pets.
Under the current Town of Indialantic Code of Ordinances, Section 8-5(d), dogs are permitted in the dog friendly beach area only from sunrise until two hours after sunrise, and from two hours before sunset until sunset.
That is a short morning window and a short evening window, not an all day beach day. Midday hours are for people without dogs. The town manager can also adopt temporary regulations for up to 60 consecutive days, and the town can change the rule by ordinance, so always read the signs at the crossover before you go. The full text is in the Town of Indialantic Code of Ordinances, Chapter 8.

Yes. The town started the Watson Drive dog beach as a pilot in 2022 and later made it permanent.
Town Council adopted Ordinance 2023-05 on July 12, 2023, to keep the section of beach near the Watson Drive crossover open to dogs on a permanent basis. You can read that action in the July 12, 2023 Town Council meeting minutes. The earlier pilot language that set an August 1, 2023 expiration is no longer the controlling rule in the published code.
Generally no. Section 6-8 of the town code says no domestic animal may enter any public park or beach in town unless the Town Council designates an area for animals and posts it. The Watson Drive dog friendly beach area is that designated exception.
James H. Nance Park at the Fifth Avenue boardwalk, the main ocean park many visitors use, is not the dog beach. Service animals and law enforcement dogs are treated differently under the same section and under Florida law. For a person with a disability, Section 413.08, Florida Statutes, covers the right to be accompanied by a service animal in public accommodations. Pets and emotional support animals that are not trained service animals are not the same thing under that statute.
For longer hours, drive a few minutes north on A1A to Brevard County's Canova Beach Park at 3299 Highway A1A in Indian Harbour Beach.
According to Brevard County Parks and Recreation, dogs are welcome on that beach if they stay on a leash and wear tags showing a current license and vaccinations. There is no fee for the dog beach, parking is free, and owners must pick up after their pets. The park also lists restrooms, outdoor showers, a pavilion, and three dune crossovers, one of them ADA accessible. It is the all day backup when Indialantic's morning and evening windows do not fit your schedule.
Beach access is only one piece. Condo and HOA pet rules, yard and fence details, and how you will park for beach trips matter more day to day.
From what I see with buyers looking at Indialantic homes and oceanfront condos, dog owners usually land in one of two routines. Some live close enough to Watson Drive to use the short morning and evening windows and keep Canova for longer days. Others treat Canova as their main beach and use Indialantic's leash walks for the neighborhood. Neither choice is wrong. What matters is matching the house, the association rules, and the drives you will make.

Yes, on a posted section north of the Watson Drive dune crossover near Sunrise Park, during the morning and evening windows in the town code. Dogs must be leashed, stay landward of the mean high water line, and owners must pick up waste right away.
No. The town code says it is a violation to take a dog seaward of the mean high water mark. The dog friendly beach area is for leashed time on the sand within the posted boundaries, not for swimming past the water line.
Nance Park is not the designated dog friendly beach area. Section 6-8 bars domestic animals from town parks and beaches unless an area is designated and posted. Use the Watson Drive area during allowed hours, or Canova Beach Park for a county dog beach.
Yes. Town code Section 6-8 and Florida Statute 413.08 allow a person with a disability to be accompanied by a service animal. Pets and emotional support animals that are not trained service animals are not covered by that exception.
